Santiago

We touched down in Santiago on February 27th, ready for an adventure that would take us all the way to Ushuaia, Argentina. Our itinerary was ambitious, with plans to spend a few days in the vibrant Chilean capital before embarking on our journey east. We had earmarked a visit to Casablanca for some much-anticipated wine tasting and a relaxing day soaking in the natural hot springs nestled in the Andes. However, as the realities of travel set in, we found ourselves overwhelmed by the heat and the lingering effects of jet lag. Instead of exploring the scenic vineyards or luxuriating in the therapeutic waters, we surrendered to the allure of our hotel pool.

Santiago City

As we ventured into the city, we exchanged plans of wine and wellness for a quest that would prove to be equally rewarding: hunting for the finest Pisco Sours in Santiago. With each bar and restaurant we visited, our excitement grew as we sipped on tangy cocktails, indulging in the local flavours while relishing the warm ambiance of the city. Although we missed out on our original itinerary, the unexpected detour allowed us to immerse ourselves in Santiago’s laid-back culture, forging unforgettable memories along the way.

The city of Santiago is set on a wide plain adjacent to the foot of the Andes, and boasts possibly one of the most dazzling backdrops of any capital city on earth. The snow-covered peaks rise behind the city like a giant white rampart against the blue sky.  Well, that’s what the guide books said – unfortunately, the haze hindered the view somewhat, and no matter how far to the right I slid the dehaze in Lightroom I couldn’t get the mountains to pop … but you get the idea.

One of the most striking aspects we observed during our exploration of Santiago was the graffiti artwork that adorned the city. These "open-air exhibitions of city art" transformed numerous streets and nooks into vibrant canvases, illustrating the creative spirit of the local community. As we wandered through the bustling alleyways, each turn revealed new murals, intricate designs, and compelling visual stories that captivated our attention. Even the interiors of hotels and bars joined in on this artistic movement, showcasing works that seamlessly blended the urban environment with the talents of both established and emerging artists.

Our adventure took a delightful turn as we traced our way to Bar Liguria, renowned for the best Pisco Sour in Santiago. Each sip of the refreshing cocktail revealed a perfect balance of flavours, leaving us longing for more. Our journey, filled with laughter and lively conversations, ultimately led us back to our hotel. Along the way, we made a couple of stops, confirming the rumour surrounding the excellence of Bar Liguria. Each encounter deepened our appreciation for the city's cultural tapestry, weaving together art, hospitality, and the unforgettable taste of Chilean tradition.

Feeling somewhat revitalized, yet still disoriented from the jet lag, we made our way to Cerro San Cristóbal, eager to immerse ourselves in the breathtaking scenery that awaited us. Taking the funicular from the vibrant neighbourhood of Bella Vista, we felt a sense of anticipation build as we ascended the hill. The ride was smooth, the air gradually becoming fresher and clearer as we climbed higher. Upon reaching the summit, we were greeted by a serene and sacred atmosphere. The Holy area, adorned with a large statue of the Virgin Mary, offered a moment of reflection amidst the hustle and bustle of the city below.

As we meandered through the pathways, the panoramic views that unfolded around us were nothing short of mesmerising. The sprawling city of Santiago, painted in hues of ochre and clay, stretched out beneath us, flanked by majestic mountains that seemed to cradle it in their rugged embrace. The stunning skyline was punctuated by the striking 980-foot Gran Torre Santiago, a majestic testament to modern architecture and the tallest skyscraper in South America. Its sleek silhouette loomed prominently in the background, a reminder of the dynamic blend of nature and urban life that defines Santiago.

At the peak, I opted for a cable car ride back down in search of another cool drink. Three brave souls, perhaps blinded by an adventurous spirit, were embarking on a gruelling hour-long trek back under the relentless sun. I could feel the heat radiating off the trail as they pressed on, determined, yet clearly lacking the clarity of thought that my choice afforded me. As I settled into my cushioned seat, a gentle breeze kissed my face, and I realised that perhaps it wasn't just a drink I was seeking, but also a moment of respite—a brief escape from the demanding call of the wild.

Santiago, the vibrant capital of Chile, is a city that beautifully marries its rich colonial history with modern urban life. Founded in 1541 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, Santiago has long been the heart of Chilean culture and governance. Strolling through its downtown core, one is immediately captivated by the elegant 19th-century neoclassical architecture that stands as a testament to the city's historical significance. Amidst these grand structures, the city boasts an intriguing network of winding side streets, where an eclectic blend of architectural styles—including art deco, neo-gothic, and contemporary designs—creates a visually stunning urban tapestry.

The city's landscape is further enhanced by its natural features. Distinctive stand-alone hills, such as San Cristóbal and Santa Lucía, rise majestically above the city, providing stunning panoramic views that showcase Santiago's expansive skyline. Additionally, the Mapocho River, which flows through the city, adds a dynamic element to the cityscape, reflecting the hustle and bustle of urban life while also offering serene spots for relaxation and contemplation. Whether you're enjoying a leisurely walk through one of its lush parks or savoring a glass of Chilean wine at a local café, Santiago's beauty unfolds at every corner, inviting exploration and appreciation of its unique charm.

Our stay in Santiago was too brief, a mere glimpse into a vibrant city filled with rich culture and warm-hearted people. As we made our way back to the airport, I found myself lost in thought about a conversation I had with our taxi driver upon our arrival. He had warned us that Santiago was a dangerous city, painting a picture of trepidation that lingered in my mind. Yet, in the days we spent exploring this beautiful place, I never once felt that sense of unease. Instead, we were greeted with kindness and hospitality at every turn, from the lively street vendors to the cheerful locals who wanted nothing more than to share their love for their city.

I could have spent far more time in Chile, however, Argentina was calling us and we had a plane to catch.
